Sumo and Tai Chi
with Angel Castillo and Jose Montenegro
Sumo: Learn the rules of sumo through a quick Shokkiri (comedic) demonstration and basic postures like Chugoshi (sumo stance) and Sonkyo (meditation stance). Improve your lower body strength and limberness through traditional sumo exercises Shiko (leg Stomps) and Shinkyaku (leg stretches). Experience the Tachiai (initial charge) through Butsukari (push drill) with our wrestlers.
Tai Chi: Participants will be introduced to fixed-step push hands (定步推手 ding bu tui shou), a tai chi training game that tests one’s ability to respond to an opponent’s force while maintaining structure and balance. We’ll start with simple pattern drills before trying some live competitive rounds. This game can sharpen and quicken your ability to sense kuzushi opportunities when practicing either Aikido or Judo.
