What martial arts does Windsong offer?

We offer aikido, judo, and jodo classes.

Am I too old to start classes?

Absolutely not! We have students who continue practicing well into their 80s. One of the things that makes our arts unique is that they are designed so that physical size and strength are not as important as other martial arts. Aikido in particular focuses on using an attacker’s momentum against them, so you can use aikido effectively at any age, size, or strength level.

Am I too out-of-shape to start classes?

We have students of all different sizes, levels of fitness and abilities. Our dojo allows you to work at your own pace and comfort level.

What is a typical aikido class like?

First, we sit in a circle and warm up by doing some basic stretches. This is followed by ukemi (falling) practice, where students learn to take falls safely. After this, we perform a group kata exercise known as “The Walk”. Once this is complete, students pair up to work on techniques. Sometimes, the whole class works on the same thing. Other times, students work on different techniques according to their skill levels and/or interests. Beginner students always work with a more advanced student (usually black belt rank) who coaches them on beginner-appropriate skills.

What is a typical jyodo class like?

Jyodo class starts with a brief warm-up followed by the 12 individual kihon (the basic stick movements).  After that, we may do some light, slow randori, where two people work with just one stick.  After that, we do partner kihon.  Those 12 individual movements are now performed against uchidachi, the person with the sword.  This usually takes about 30 minutes.  The remainder of the class (30-45 minutes) varies from week to week from work on kata, to work on specific kihons (stick techniques), to sword-on-sword work, to work on the jo part of San Kata.

Do you offer children’s classes?

At this time, no. All of our classes are designed for ages 18+. However, we may allow older teens to join classes on a case-by-case basis.

Besides self-defense, what other benefits can training offer me?

There are lots of other benefits to our martial arts besides the self-defense aspect. Our emphasis on learning to fall safely is invaluable, especially as we grow older. Many of our members have reported that their training has prevented them from serious injury in a “real-life” fall. Students also develop improved balance and flexibility, as well as increased fitness. Also – and perhaps most important – are the friendships that develop among our students.

What can I expect in my first class?

A warm welcome! When you visit us for the first time, you will be greeted by the instructor and other students. You are welcome to just sit and watch, but it’s more fun if you participate. We will ask you to sign a waiver and take off your shoes if you want to participate (only socks or bare feet allowed on the mat). Wear comfortable clothes, such as sweatpants/yoga pants and a T-shirt.

You will work one-on-one with the instructor or another student who will guide you through the basics of the warm-ups and beginner-level moves. It’s a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere and new students generally report having a great time.

How is billing handled?

Windsong bills by the month.  Students can have it debited from a bank account or credit card or send in payment. We also allow students to pay by the individual class for $10/class for a short amount of time.  See the tuition page for additional information.
