This is a neat way to play with maki-otoshi. This reinforces the curling action and is an easy way to work on spacing with your partner. However, this method of maki-otoshi does not teach you how to intercept a moving target like the standard practice forms do.
Begin with weapons crossed at standard maai. Nick Lowry is tori on the left, Danny Carrillo is uke on the right.
Uke does not raise the sword. Uke simply thrusts at tori, very much like the attack action is tsuki-hazush just without the windup. Tori simply curls into the final maki-otoshi position. This picture is early in uke’s thrusting action.
