Techniques
In general, we have chosen to follow the Kodokan system of judo. However, we have also chosen to focus our studies on the more technical, traditional, and self-defense aspects of the art, rather than on competition (or shiai). So while our students are certainly free and welcome to participate in tournaments, we do not require it for any rank advancement.
Our curriculum is based on the study of two groups of techniques:
Nage Waza — throwing techniques
Katame Waza — grappling techniques
In addition, our curriculum also includes the study of kata, pre-arranged series of techniques used to teach and understand principles:
Nage no Kata — throwing forms
Katame no Kata — grappling forms
Ju no Kata — gentle forms
Finally, our study involves the practice of randori where judoka throw or grapple in a free-form, open setting as a practical application of learned techniques. The list below comprises all the primary judo techniques for throwing and grappling as taught by both the Kodokan Institute and Windsong Dojo.
